Black-and-white portrait of Hasan Abo Shally

حسن أبو شعلة

I build things that matter.

My focus is applying product thinking, systems design, and new technology with intention, to help people, organizations, and communities thrive and reach their potential.

What I work on

Where I Build

I build bridges. Between intelligence and agency, between systems and humanity, between potential and fulfillment, between experience and inspiration.

Chapter · where it started

Before the numbers, there was a basement.

  1. Ar'ara

    A basement in Ar’ara

A kid with ADHD at the family computer, building web pages for hours. My mom thought it was too much screen time. She still brought tea and za’atar down to the basement every day.

  2. Tel Aviv · Wadi Ara

“Do I belong?” became “Do we belong?”

In Tel Aviv I was almost always the only Arab in the room. Back home in Wadi Ara: silence. Arabs were 21% of the population and less than 2% of the tech workforce.

  3. 2013

    Then the basement filled up.

My friend Omar and I failed at building an app. We posted a photo anyway. A friend asked to sit beside us and learn, then two more came. My dad took walls down so we could fit, and my mom made za’atar in bulk. We called it Hasoub: Arabic for “a computer.”

  4. Age 23

    Behind the fridge.

I left my job to keep Hasoub alive. A week later I lost my scholarship. Four friends near Tel Aviv University made space for me between their fridge and the kitchen wall. That space was my room for two years.

The photo of me receiving Forbes 30 Under 30 was everywhere. The photo of dinner in my room, two hours later, stayed on my desktop.

  5. 2022

    The lab I dreamed of.

We turned the abandoned building where I once dreamed of a school lab into Hasoub Garage, the first tech and innovation center in our area. More than 1,200 people came to the opening.

Would I sleep behind a fridge for this?

The question I still ask before every new venture.
